Purpose
The WNY Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders is one of six regional centers in New York under the auspices of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) at SUNY – Albany. The primary purpose of the WNY Regional Center for ASD is provide information to parents, school district professionals and human service individuals who live with or serve children and families with ASD. The center is committed to providing information and practical strategies that are supported by scientific research – commonly referred to as evidence-based practice.
Who We Serve
The WNY Center for ASD provides support to families and professionals in seven counties (Niagara, Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Genesee and Orleans) including the 97 school districts in the region. The project primarily addresses the needs of children and young adults with ASD who are between the ages of 3 to 18 years.
What We Plan To Do
When fully operational, the Center’s activities will consist of brief workshops and resource materials that provide practical guidance to professionals and parents. It is anticipated that workshop topics will include: characteristics of children with ASD, effective strategies for addressing challenging behaviors, developing and fostering social and pragmatic communication skills, school and community integration, and other similar topics. Workshops will be provided at various locations throughout WNY. Eventually, this webpage will provide fact sheets and links to other important and helpful websites.
